About this compound
What Is Bacteriostatic Water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most common bacteria, which is what allows a single vial to be entered repeatedly over a period of up to 28 days without the contamination risk that plain sterile water carries.
Why It Is Required
Research peptides ship as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder because that is the only form in which they remain stable for extended storage. They must be brought back into solution before any laboratory work, and bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for that purpose. Plain sterile water and saline offer no preservative protection and are single-use only.
