What Is KPV?
KPV is a tripeptide (Lys-Pro-Val) corresponding to the C-terminal 11-13 fragment of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It retains the anti-inflammatory activity of the parent hormone while carrying none of its melanocortin-1-receptor pigmentary activity — which is why it is used to isolate the immunomodulatory arm of α-MSH signalling.
Key Mechanisms
- NF-κB inhibition — blocks nuclear translocation of NF-κB, damping transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines
- Cytokine suppression — reduces TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 output in stimulated epithelial and immune cells
- PepT1-mediated uptake — enters colonic epithelial cells and macrophages via the peptide transporter PepT1, concentrating it at inflamed mucosa
- Antimicrobial activity — direct activity reported against bacterial and fungal strains including S. aureus and C. albicans
